Summary of Work Experience
Dr. van der Lelie obtained his Ph.D. in Mathematics and Sciences (specialty Molecular Genetics and Microbiology) from the University of Groningen, The Netherlands, in 1989. After a Postdoctoral position at Transgène, Strasbourg, France, he worked for 11 years as a Research Scientist at the Belgium Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN) and the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO), in Mol, Belgium, where his research focused on the use of plants and microorganisms for the remediation of large areas with soil and groundwater contaminated with heavy metals and organic contaminants. One of the key strategies of this work was to use plant beneficial microorganisms to improve plant establishment on marginal land. In August 2001, he joined the Biology Department of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), in Upton, NY, where he founded the microbiology group, and also co-founded the group for bioinspired assembly of nanomaterials at the Center for Functional Nanomaterials (CFN). During his tenure at BNL, his interdisciplinary research focused on the interface between fundamental and applied studies and covered a broad range of topics. In January 2011, he joined RTI International (RTI; a non for profit research organization), where he successfully founded the Center for Agricultural and Environmental Biotechnology (CAEB), USA. In addition, he became the Acting Director of the Center for Microbial Communities & Health Research.

At CAEB, he developed and successfully implemented his vision for an integrated research and development platform around plants and their beneficial microorganisms to discover and validate commercially attractive assets around sustainable agriculture, environmental remediation and site management, biofuel production and waste conversion, and food safety and security. In 2013, due to the interest of the agricultural industry in the asset portfolio (comprising a unique collection of plant beneficial microorganisms plus the IP for their use) developed at CAEB, the group was successfully divested by RTI and acquired by FMC Corporation to become the cornerstone of their global R&D engine to develop sustainable agricultural biosolutions based on plant associated microorganisms, an effort headed by Dr. van der Lelie in his position as Global Director for Ag Biosolutions R&D, USA. In this role he was responsible to develop, communicate and implement the long term strategic R&D vision for Ag Biosolutions that supports the marketing strategy and financial objectives of FMC corporation, and to translate this vision into a roadmap comprized of specific research projects, budgets, hiring and infrastructure investments to meet the program goals. He was also responsible for defining and implementing the IP strategy, and to provide critical support to other functions in the organization, including marketing, production, commercial outreach (to major clients and grower organizations), and regulatory compliance.

Dr. van der Lelie served as one of the four FMC members on the Steering Committee that manages the strategic alliance between FMC Corporation and Christian Hansen (CHR), a global bioscience company that develops natural solutions for the food, nutritional, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Within this role, he worked closely with his counterpart at CHR to manage various long term multi-industry development projects to bring product ideas/concept from the design/innovation stage via the proof of concept and development phase to a successful commercial launch.

In 2015, Dr. van der Lelie was one of the co-founders of Gusto Global, a start up company that aims to develop microbiome-based therapeutics. Gusto was created around the vision that state of the art bioinformatics and modeling can be successfully used to improve and lower the costs of the R&D process, including clinical trials and regulatory acceptance, for microbiome-based therapeutics. Since becoming the acting CSO in July 2016, he has played a critical role in defining Gusto’s strategic vision, and to translate this into an action plan that is successfully being implemented to develop Gusto’s core facilities and technology platforms, create strategic partnerships with academic and commercial entities, define and license technologies, build an IP portfolio, and to obtain startup funding from VC and strategic investors.

His research has resulted in more than 150 publications in peer reviewed journals, including PLoS ONE, PLoS Genetics, Nature, Nature Chemistry, Nature Nanotechnology and Nature Biotechnology, and 21 patents / patent applications.
